Indonesian: The Development and Use of A National Language

This study is an attempt to relate in sociolinguistics terms the development and use of the Indonesian language or Bahasa Indonesia. It deals mainly with the problems connected with the employment of the language as a modern means of communication and as an important tool for cementing national unity among the multilingual communities of Indonesia. rnrnThe book is an abridged and slightly modified version of my Ph.D dissertation which I submitted to the University of London in 1976. A discussion of some length regarding aspects of socio-linguistic theories and one or two issues which is part of my thesis has not been included in this book.
