The Crescent Behind the Thousand Holy Temples: An Ethnographic Study of the Minority Muslims of Pegayaman North Bali
The book in general describes about various strategies developed by the Muslims of Pegayaman, living in Northern Bali, to maintain their religious tradition and identities among the Hindu Balinese people. Such strategies include important institutions operating both inside and outside the social vicinity of the Pegayaman. The effort of maintaining their religious tradition and identities does not prove to be an easy task. It sometimes generates their-group conflict between the Pegayaman Muslims and the Hindu-Balinese communities living around the former group. The conflict is not only symbolically and ideologically expressed, but also is manifested in physical clashes.
Although the book is a result of an intensive fieldwork research, it does not mean that it exclude some weaknesses and lackness from it. Since I only have limited capability, to absorb all the problems developed in the field within limited period of time and area of study, consequently the scope and focus of my research is confined and directed toward particular issue that interests me mostly. This could mean that there are still a number of important problems in Pegayaman which require to be observed and studied further. For this reason I, thus, ecourage more researchers to conduct further research on various and study areas. This, hopefully, will not only improve my research finding, but also will enrich references on various Anthropological and Sociological studies.
