On the Subject of Labour: Essays in Memory of Frans Hüsken
Labour is a complicated concept because it has a number of different meanings within and across different societies. It involves not only physical activities and economic transactions, but also social relations, religious meanings and personal identities. The topic of this volume vary from agrarian labour relations and labour migration, to unfree labour and bondage, ritual and religious labour, work ethic, and labour and pleasure. The essays are based on ethnographic field research in the Netherlands, Switzerland, the Mediterranean area, Ghana, Latin America, India, Indonesia, Cambodia, Australia and New Zealand. The cross-cultural comparison of labour makes a valuable contribution to the ongoing debate about the meaning of labour.
