Charitable Gambling" in American Culture: An Ethnographic Study of Bingo and Poker Players"
Playing poker and bingo at charitable gambling establishments is a widespread pattern in American society. This study explorers how and why these games appeal to group of American people and seeks to discover what role these games serve within the players' lives.
This study is based on an in-depth ethnographic approach and a comparison of the two kinds of gambling establishments set up by nonprofit organizations. It studies patrons who frequent bingo parlours and poker halls and compares their specific cultures. The field work covers seven different bingo halls run by Catholic churches, Jewish Synagogues, Fire Departments, and five poker places at Fire Houses and City/Town Halls. All of the poker establishments and five of the Bingo hall were located in Prince George's county, Maryland, U.S.A. Some additional research was also done in New Jersey: Poker in Atlantic City, and two other Bingo Halls in Trenton.
